Artist in Pursuit of Light
Who is not drawn to a light in the night, whether the candle in the window or Yuletide decorations, summertime fireflies or the stars and the moon? The beauty of these lights, up close and from millions of light years away, captivates me and inspires me to find the luminescence that exists within and all around us. I am on a journey, experimenting to represent the glow of this life on earth through the materials at hand, whether paint on linen or the layering of encaustics.
Living in England, the Philippines and most recently, Hong Kong for six years, I have been immersed in these cultures and have experienced firsthand differences, technically, in the way that materials are used, and aesthetically, the way that subject matter is viewed and represented. I have learned that there are many, maybe an infinity of underlying assumptions and ways to approach a problem. I have also experienced the similarities in all of us that make us human; love of a parent for a child, happiness at a wedding ceremony and grief at the death of a loved one. Through all of this there is the constant of the energy of our existence. Calling upon my experiences, it is this light, this energy in our world that I am seeking and that I am working to convey through my art.
